Land-Based Education for Urban Sustainability and Indigenous Solidarity

Graduate Researcher: Angela Wang

Supervisor: Heather Dorries

This project partners with the Toronto Chinatown Land Trust (TCLT) to explore how urban sustainability initiatives can integrate anti-colonial principles and Indigenous solidarity into organizational practice.

TCLT is a community-controlled land trust working to steward land in Toronto’s Chinatown for long-term community benefit. Through its Hak Hei program, the organization prioritizes relationship-building with Indigenous communities and aligns its work with broader Land Back movements while addressing colonial dynamics in urban development.

The project will support the development of a land-based education and membership program designed to strengthen understanding of Indigenous history, land stewardship, and sustainability within Chinatown’s community networks.

Key activities include:

  • Creating educational content on anti-colonial urban land stewardship

  • Developing internal learning resources on Indigenous history and solidarity

  • Supporting community events that deepen relationships between Chinatown residents and Indigenous land and water defenders

The project will produce practical educational tools and models for equitable, community-driven urban sustainability.
